Ok, so I was really pumped for this concert. I had no idea what I was going to get from Saint Vitus, but had a fairly good idea what Sourvein and Weedeater were going to bring, as I saw Hail!Hornert earlier which includes Dave from Weedeater and T-Roy from Sourvein.
First thing first, parking was a bitch to find. Finally found one about 4 1/2 blocks away which isn't bad at all. When I get in there I'm greeted by one big room with a bar in the back and a pretty big stage in the front. Beer was pricey ($6 before show, $7 during) but it had one of my favorite beers (Lagunitas IPA) on tap so I didn't complain. I had a brief discussion with one of the employees there followed by a long one with a guy in a black sleeveless Saint V shirt (Keeping it classy!) BTW I was wearing my Sleep Dragonaut T! We dove into a conversations about live shows we've seen recently and was able to show off some serious metal knowledge /flex. But this dude dropped a massive bomb on me with a Matt Pike sighting!
At one point I talked a little bit about Hail!Hornet when I dropped T-Roy's name JUST as he was walking by. He quickly turned with a confused look followed by a whats up. Quickly filled him in and had a fist bump before he went to get ready. Way cool.
Now having knowledge of that bombshell Sourvein took the stage and started to rip through songs in a typical sludge demeanor. Then boom they started playing Gemini which is now my new favorite Sourvein song... That song shredded so fucking much live... Holy crap.
During the transition into Weedeater I had a little discussion with the classy Saint V fan while I'm constantly getting fist-bumps for my Sleep T. While walking there all the sudden the one and only Matt Pike walked by. Only getting a quick glimpse, I had no chance to show off my threads. Also had news of a little known metal chick named Liz Buckingham (Electric Wizard). Fucking A... all the Doom legends are out!
Weedeater started and they kicked a lot of but. Dave Collins was very talkative in between his swigs of whiskey straight from the bottle in classic form. Before the set started a fan walked up to him and handed him a joint and he remarked "Oh! I Love these things!" Took a hit and passed it back.. Haha. They started off with God Luck and Good Speed which is probably my favorite of the songs they played. But was really disappointed that they didn't play any of my favorites in their discog. (Long Gone, Jason... The Dragon, Hungry Jack, Mancoon) but still a great set full of great riffs.
Ok... So now its time for Saint Vitus... I went to relieve myself in (really nice bathrooms where I didn't have to touch anything to get in and wash up and leave!) recognized a guy from the Sleep show and CoC show where I chatted with him. Had some conversations standing and waiting right in front of the stage. While waiting I had another glimpse... Jason Landrian of Black Cobra was there! Haha.. Wow.
Ok so I was right up front for Saint Vitus... They took the stage and shit was getting a little crazy already! Some guy wanted to get up on stage and Wino proceeded to shove him back into the crowd! Haha. They started off by asking how people liked the new album... Everyone loved it but one guy which Dave Chandler proceeded to rip him a new one! Haha. They started off with some new stuff and worked there way to the old. Half way through I found my self at the left side of the stage about 10 feet from where Liz Buckingham was standing enjoying the show.
Wino is really talkative as well... He and Dave had plenty of things to get off their mind and I really enjoyed it. At one point T-Roy was walking by and saw me and we had a little handshake man hug kind of thing happened. Can't really remember but it happened and really shows how much they really appreciate their fans!
Saint V continued to pound through some of the best... and one of my all time favorites... White Stallions! Dave doing Jimi Hendrix style teeth solos and going the whole 9 yards sparing zero room for lack of entertainment. Then like that they said they were done and walked of the stage... and not a single person left... It was loud and packed... When they quickly came back to play some more. And it all ended with Born to Late. This is up there with best live songs ever. HOLY SHEEET. I sang a long like much of the crowd. During the solo Dave jumped down into the mosh where he was surrounded (including me as I shoved my way in there and grabbed the neck of his guitar .. So awesome.
The little things in the show is what it made it great... Dave took his guitar and rubbed the neck on the top of a girls head... His priceless look on his face when they had guitar sound problems and had to change some of the wiring... Nope they didn't stop playing for that.
Amazing show... if you ever get the chance to see them.. Do it. Greatest show I'll ever see for sure. Would like to add that the place had insanely good sound quality too. I had ZERO ear ringing in the next day as well.
